Our first big family night event was a huge success! Approximately 150 people, including students, teachers, parents, grand parents and siblings, attended Boooooks and Treats on Thursday, October 19.
Over the course of the evening families learned about the Third Grade Success Act and how doing everyday things like reading with your child and playing games together can support their learning. Parents and children rotated through three stations during the event. At one station parents and children were able to read together, then students could take Accelerated Reader tests. This also allowed parents to see some of the technology we are using at school and ask questions about the program, which supports independent reading. Each child left this station with a treat bag courtesy of Fairplain staff. At another station, Mrs. Reed demonstrated a read aloud of The Big Pumpkin and explained how modeling good reading and building prior knowledge about the topics you are reading about can help make your child more successful when reading. It is also a great way to build vocabulary and comprehension skills. Students each left this station with a book and bookmark to help build their own personal library, provided by Title I funding. At the third station, families were invited to play games together to spend quality time together while building conversation skills as well as vocabulary. Students left this station with a fun card game to keep the fun going at home, courtesy of Fairplain Elementary School.
The evening ended with door prizes being handed out. It was a wonderful learning fun event for everyone who came! Thank you for spending your time with us!
